OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, I request that you help me to encounter you as I meditate on your word.

Scripture Union Daily Guide 27th July 2024 Outline:
The land occupied by the Israelites belonged to God; so easy disposal of property was frowned upon. Even when hardship may cause this to be done, a close family member was expected to buy the property, or the needy owner should wait until the Jubilee year when the property sold would revert to him by law. Notice the fairness when land is redeemed (vs.26-28).
In vs.35–38, the practical application of being one’s brother’s keeper is stressed. Whatever the cause of a brother’s poverty, he is to be accorded hospitality and must not be allowed to die of starvation. Is this love practised in your family, church or community? Practical help adequate to meet the person’s needs was necessary rather than just empty words of love (see James 2:14–16; 1 John 3:17-18).
Note the other areas of practical love – a needy Israelite was not to be exploited by his fellows and loans to the poor were to be free of interest. Are we that helpful to others? See Paul’s admonition in Galatians 6:10.
Notice in vs.39-45 further guideline in the practical care of one another. Consider the case of the man who, out of poverty, sells himself to another Israelite. Notice how he should be treated. His right to regain his freedom in the year of Jubilee was intended to preserve the humanity and dignity of the poor.
